It’s the most magical time of year for makeup fanatics. The Sephora VIB sale! Admittedly, I haven’t been buying much makeup since the COVID-19 pandemic started because, well, I stopped wearing it. Between staying at home and wearing a mask, it felt harder to justify buying makeup when I wasn’t going anywhere. But every now and then I’d look at my stack of palettes or my lined up lipsticks, missing the days I would do a full face look for work or for a night out with friends or going to a concert. So now that I’ve gotten back into the habit of doing makeup (even if no one will see it), I felt a more impulsed to buy some products for the VIB sale. I also, for the first time (ever?) went a little hard on the spending, but I’m pretty stoked on my purchases and also thankful that this sale rolls around only twice a year.
Here’s what I bought!
Moroccanoil - Hydrating Styling Cream
I was first introduced to the Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream as part of Sephora’s annual birthday gift bonus. I had heard really good things about their products so I was excited to try it. This leave-in hair styling cream has argan oil and anti-static ingredients to help condition, hydrate, and reduce frizz. And I can definitely confirm it does all of the above. This can be applied to either damp or dry hair but I’ve noticed better results if applied to dry hair. After applying, it makes my hair feel soft, more voluminous and smells great. I’m really pleased with the overall results and I’m excited to further add this to my haircare routine!
The Ordinary - Lactic Acid 5% + HA
Initially, I was a little hesitant about buying anything from The Ordinary. I had bought the Glyconic Acid 7% Toning Solution about two years ago, but when first discovering the brand, I was pretty intimidated. Between the scientific names and trying to figure out my skin type and if I’d experience a reaction, I was a little skeptic. But with all prices being $20 and under on average, I figured it wouldn’t hurt. I was very impressed with the toner and decided to try my hands at another product. Many sang the praises of the Lactic Acid 5% + HA. This formula helps to exfoliate the skin and evens skin texture. This stuff is great for fine lines, wrinkles, dullness and uneven texture. Immediately I noticed a difference in the shrinkage of my pores and a reduced redness, plus my skin looked more fresh and refined. I’d caution for those who’ve never tried The Ordinary to ease in to using their products, and to always do a patch test for a potential reaction. But all in all, a winner in my book! (Did i mention it was $6 too?)
Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez - Lip Souffle Matte Cream Lipstick in the shade ‘Fearless’
A lot of celebs these days are getting into the makeup game (Rihanna and Lady Gaga to name a few) but one of the latest comes from none other than Selena Gomez. I had heard mixed but mainly positive reviews about Rare Beauty, and figured since I was going to treat myself a little extra for this VIB sale, I thought I’d finally try her line. I went with the LIp Souffle Matte Cream Lipstick in the shade ‘Fearless.’ This product is described as weightless, rich with colour and hydration and also provides a velvety finish.
The shade is a little darker than I was anticipating, but I know it’ll make for a great fall/winter lipstick as opposed to spring/summer. The colour is super pigminted and applies very well. After application it is lightweight and airy as described. I did’t find it as hydrating, and had to wear a bit of lip balm underneath, but that’s not a dealbreaker. Currently, I’m sitting on the fence about it, but give it a few more wears and it might grow on me.
Moroccanoil - Moroccanoil Treatment
Like the Hydrating Styling Cream, I first tried the Moroccanoil treatment with the birthday package. This oil helps to make hair stronger, shinier and softer. A little goes a long way with this one and I noticed results almost immediately. If I can’t get to a salon for the foreseeable future, at least I know I can use this product and it’ll make my hair feel a little less lifeless.
NARS - Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer in the shade ‘Gotland’
With summer approaching, I wanted to up my skin protection. I’ve been adding sunscreen more consistently in my routine but wanted to have something that would sit well on my skin especially while wearing makeup. To make it easier, I figured it was time to branch out towards tinted moisturizers. I had heard many things about NARS’ (which has SPF 30) and had seen great results with their concealer (an absolute staple of mine) and figured it’d be worth a shot. This tinted moisturizer is super lightweight and applies fairly well. I’d avoid using a sponge or beauty blender so the product doesn’t absorb. I’ve been using my hands to apply (not my most favourite method) but still found that it applies evenly. It’s not very matte so a finishing powder may be needed if you prefer that look. Otherwise, it will give that perfect summer glow while also protecting your skin.
fresh - Soy Makeup Removing Face Wash
A staple in my skincare collection, the soy makeup removing face wash from fresh is an absolute dream. This cleaner is a lightweight gel that is smooth and soft on the skin. It digs deep to help get rid of makeup but also clean out pores for a tightened, clean finish. This one is a little pricey and even more so if you use it every day, but I’ve found that a little dollop goes a long way.
First Aid Beauty - Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration
Another staple, the Ultra Repair Cream from First Aid Beauty has been a saving grace for my skin, but especially during the pandemic. It’s a rich, moisturizing cream, that is great for the face but also for the entire body. So the dry patches from my constant hand washing have been relieved by this wonderful product. It does feel a little weighted on the skin, which is why I’d recommend letting it set for a bit before applying makeup. Can be good for evening and night but I've found better results putting it on right after showering.
